Split’s Old Town, for example, is built around the remains of the Roman Emperor Diocletian’s Palace.

The palace itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the best things to see during your 2 days in Split.

In addition to its historical significance, Split is also known for its lively nightlife and excellent restaurants.

How to Spend the Best Two Days in Split

Now that you know a little bit more about Split, it’s time to start planning your 2 days in Split itinerary.

I’ve listed all the best things to do in Split below, so you don’t miss out on anything during your trip.

2 Days in Split: Day 1

Arrive in Split and Explore Split Old Town

Narrow streets of Old Town for 2 days in Split Croatia

Start off your 2 days in Split Croatia getaway by exploring the Old Town.

Start your 2 days in Split by checking into your hotel and dropping off your luggage. Then, it’s time to explore Split Old Town — the beating heart of the city.

The ancient city is full of Roman ruins from the Roman Empire days, medieval churches, and palaces that have been beautifully preserved.

You can explore the Diocletian Palace (more on that below), wander through the atmospheric streets of the old city, or eat some delicious food in one of the many cafes and restaurants.

The best part is that Old Town Split is that it’s a car free zone, so you can really take your time and soak in the atmosphere without worrying about traffic.

👉 I recommend doing a walking tour of Old Town Split to make sure you don’t miss anything. Plus, it’s a great way to learn about the history of Split from a local’s perspective. Here are some of the best tours.

Visit Diocletian’s Palace: The Most Popular 2 Days in Split Attraction

A view of Diocletian's Palace without tourists.

Diocletian’s Palace.

No 2 days in Split itinerary would be complete without a visit to Diocletian’s Palace — Split’s most popular attraction.

The palace was built by the Roman Emperor Diocletian at the turn of the 4th century and served as his retirement residence.

Nowadays, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most famous and best preserved Roman ruins in Europe.

The Palace is an extending complex of buildings and courtyards surrounded by high walls. The Roman architecture is truly breathtaking.

One of the most prominent features of the Palace is its Peristyle, a central courtyard with a double colonnade of Corinthian columns.

Today, the Palace is home to several museums and art galleries, as well as a lively market. And, the Palace is what makes Split one of the most underrated cities in Europe.

👉 The best way to learn about Diocletian’s Palace is via a tour. There’s so much history to take in, and a tour guide will be able to bring the palace to life. Here are some of the best tours.

Climb to the Bell Tower at St. Domnius Cathedral

The tall and climbable bell tower at St. Domnius Cathedral.

Climb the bell tower at St. Domnius Cathedral for epic views of the city!

While inside Diocletian’s Palace, make your way to the nearby St. Domnius Cathedral.

It was originally built as a mausoleum for Diocletian but was later converted into a cathedral.

The Cathedral is most famous for its striking Bell Tower, which offers panoramic views over Split Old Town and the surrounding area.

The original colonnade of 24 columns still surrounds the structure and is one of the most beautiful features of the Cathedral.

Rising majestically from the center of Diocletian’s Palace, the Bell Tower is a symbol of Split’s rich history and its bright future.

At almost 195 feet, it’s one of the tallest bell towers in Europe, and its bells can be heard across the city.

To reach the top of the Bell Tower, you’ll need to climb over 180 steps. But, trust me — it’s worth it.

If you’re not into hiking, I don’t recommend attempting the climb. The steps are very narrow, and it’s easy to get dizzy.

Hang Out at People’s Square

People's Square in Split which is a town square with restaurants and shops.

People’s Square is a fun place to hang out during your 2 days in Split.

After exploring Diocletian’s Palace and climbing to the top of St. Domnius Cathedral, it’s time to head to People’s Square — one of Split’s most popular gathering places.

It’s just a short walk away from the main attractions, and it’s a great place to rest your feet and grab a bite to eat at one of the great restaurants in the area.

If you want to try some of the local food, this is the place to do it. There are plenty of outdoor tables where you can enjoy a meal at affordable prices.

You’ll also find the 15th-century Town Hall here, as well as a number of other historical buildings.

Go on a Tour of Game of Thrones Sites

Next up on your 2 days in Split trip is a fun and unique tour!

If you’re a fan of the popular TV show “Game of Thrones,” then you’ll be excited to know that you can visit some of the filming locations in real life!

Among the most popular sites in Split are Diocletian’s Palace, where a few important scenes were shot (including slave city and the slaves of Meereen), and Klis Fortress, which is featured prominently in several key scenes.

Of course, no visit to Split would be complete without seeing the famous Peristyle Square, which is one of the most iconic locations in Game of Thrones.

👉 If you’re a diehard fan, then you should consider going on a Game of Thrones tour. You’ll get to visit the most important filming locations and learn about the show’s history.

Take a Walk Along the Riva

The city of Split lined along the sea which is the Riva.

The gorgeous Riva.

The Riva is one of the most popular spots in Split, Croatia. When I lived in Split, I spent a lot of time walking along the Riva, enjoying the fresh air and the incredible views.

Located right on the water, Split’s promenade is the perfect place to relax and watch the world go by.

It’s a great place to go for a walk, people watch, or just sit on one of the benches and enjoy the view.

My favorite thing to do is to get a cocktail at Brasserie on 7 and enjoy the sunset over the Adriatic Sea.

I don’t recommend eating dinner or lunch at the restaurants along Split’s Riva because they’re overpriced, and the food isn’t that good. But, a sundowner is a must!

2 Days in Split Day 2

Hike up Marjan Hill for Stunning Views of Split and the Adriatic

The ancient church of St. Nicholas on Marjan Hill.

Church of St. Nicholas on Marjan Hill.

On your second day of exploring Split, I recommend hiking up Marjan Hill. Don’t let the word “hike” scare you — it’s more of a brisk walk than anything else.

This hill is located just outside of the city center and is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.

At the top of Marjan, you’ll find a park with several walking trails, as well as a few restaurants and cafes.

Marjan Hill is also home to the Old Jewish Cemetery, which is Croatia’s oldest Jewish cemetery.

But, the best part is the view. From the top of Marjan, you’ll have sweeping views of Split, the Adriatic Sea, and the surrounding islands.

Whether you’re looking for history or nature, Marjan Hill is definitely worth a visit.

Enjoy a Half Day Adventure to the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon Split is one of those top destinations you should add to your 2 days in Split itinerary.

Located in Krknjaši Bay just outside the town of Trogir, this lagoon is famous for its crystal-clear blue waters and stunning beaches.

You can take a dip in the lagoon or simply relax on the beach and enjoy the view.

The Blue Lagoon is also a great place for snorkeling as it’s home to a lot of colorful marine life.

In addition, the lagoon is a popular spot for swimming since it’s sheltered from the wind and has a gentle current.

It’s the perfect spot to relax, swim, and enjoy the incredible views.

Half-day boat trips to the Blue Lagoon from Croatia are very common, and the Blue Lagoon is the perfect spot to relax, swim, and enjoy the incredible views.

👉 I definitely recommend going on one of these tours because it’s a great way to see the lagoon without having to worry about logistics.

👉 If you want to turn the Blue Lagoon into an all-day escape, here are a few more options.

Spend Some Time at the Beach (Kasjuni Beach and Bačvice Beach)

Aerial view of Bacvice Beach in Split.

Bacvice Beach.

While visiting Split, you’ll also want to spend part of the day exploring Split’s beaches and enjoying some beach time.

Kasjuni Beach and Bacvice Beach are two of the most popular beaches in Split.

Kasjuni Beach is located just outside of the city center, while Bacvice Beach is located in the city center.

Both beaches offer stunning views, gorgeous waters, and plenty of opportunities to relax and soak up the sun.

Kasjuni Beach is a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing, and there are also a few restaurants, cafes, and beach bars nearby, making it the perfect spot to spend a few hours.

Bačvice Beach is also a great spot for swimming, sunbathing, and relaxing. However, Bacvice Beach is small and gets crowded.

If you don’t want to take a boat trip to nearby islands, but you still want to experience some of Croatia’s stunning beaches, I recommend spending a few hours at these two great beaches.

How to Get to Split

The city is easily accessible by plane, ferry, train, bus, and car.

Split International Airport has incoming flights from a few countries, including Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom.

The airport is located around 12 miles from the Old Town, and you can take an Uber or a bus to your hotel or wherever you’re going.

You can also take a ferry from a few destinations to get to Split, and the ferry port is just a few minutes away from the Old Town.

Additionally, it’s easy to get to Split via bus or train. There are several bus and train routes that operate in Croatia, and you can easily find a connection to Split.

Last but not least, you can rent a car and go on a road trip to Split.

How to Get Around During Your 2 Days in Split Croatia

Getting around Split is easy, and there are several transportation options available.

Split is pedestrian-friendly, and many of the city’s attractions are located within walking distance of each other.

Best Time to Visit Split

The best time to visit Split is between September and October, when the tourist rush has died down from the summer months, and the Adriatic Sea is still warm enough for swimming.

Temperatures may drop into the 40s and 50s by November, where they’ll remain for the rest of the winter.

The months of April through June are warm, with visitors flocking to the city, but the peak season is in July and August, when the weather is perfect for beach days. But, hotel prices are expensive during these months.
